Homework Essay

Here is an interesting essay by an elementary school student:
Homework and Students
Have you ever felt frustrated at how much homework you have?  Some parents may say that it’s because you are being lazy. My sister and I sometimes feel frustrated, but we think that it’s not because of laziness, it’s because of too much homework!  Below, I discuss reasons why too much homework is bad for students.

Too much homework damages kids work ethic. One afternoon, for example, my sister was relaxing after a long day at school. My father then told her “you should do your homework soon”. She is in first grade, and gets a huge packet every week.”Okay, I’ll do it now!” said my sister, and started working. At first she handed in her packet only 1 day late. But there was a reward system for turning in your homework on time, and she never quite made it. This was deeply discouraging, and later she tried less and less to finish her work. Now when she is asked to do homework, she procrastinates as much as possible. So, too much homework makes kids procrastinate.

Too much homework can be overwhelming. For example, whenever I get lots of homework to do at home, I think “I should just get this over with!”  I start doing on assignment, but then I start to think, “I have so much other stuff to do!”  I then try to get started on each assignment. Soon, I think “I can’t finish anything! I may as well not even try,” and I take a very long break. Sometimes, I don’t turn these things in on time. Homework makes kids feel incapable of completing things.

Too much homework means too little relaxation time! This is because with too much homework, it is like you are carrying a heavy load. If you relax, the load only becomes heavier. But if you work, the load gets lifted. Now you may think, “Well,  what if you just do the work in the first place?” Yes, this is a lot better than putting it off until the last evening, but you still get too little relaxation. For example, we were assigned to make a math game, which was actually a fun assignment, but we didn’t have a lot of time to get it done. “Let’s just get this over with,” I thought. So, I used up all of my relaxation time just to “get it over with.” So, even if you do not procrastinate, too much homework forces you to have too little relaxation time.

It feels great to finish lots of homework. When I finished my math game, I felt so much accomplishment that I jumped for joy! “I finished! Now I can finally relax!” But afterwards I didn’t get any of the relaxation time I anticipated. All that happened was I turned it in on time. Even if you work really hard on homework, you don’t get any ‘reward’ for it.  These reasons, among others, are why students are negatively affected by too much homework.

Ride Free Area cancellation

As of September 29th, King County Metro will cancel the Ride Free Area program. This will significantly add wait time for boarding buses in Downtown, and I think that this change rather defeats the purpose of the Transit Tunnel. Now, all buses will be "pay as you enter" and all passengers will exit via the rear door. ORCA card holders will get a big benefit because they din't have to keep track of a billion paper transfers while shopping downtown.
